What is a Chaperone?
A chaperone is a trained observer present during a medical examination or procedure to provide support to both the patient and the healthcare professional. The chaperone’s role includes:
- Ensuring patient dignity and privacy
- Providing emotional support
- Protecting against any form of abuse
- Assisting with procedures if necessary
Types of Chaperones
- Clinical Chaperone: A healthcare professional who understands the procedures being carried out.
- Non-Clinical Chaperone: A trained administrative staff member aware of the chaperone role.
- Personal Chaperone: A family member, friend, or relative chosen by the patient.
Patient Rights
- You have the right to request a chaperone at any time during your consultation, examination, or treatment.
- You can choose to have a family member, friend, or relative present as a chaperone.
- If a chaperone is not available, you have the right to reschedule your appointment.
- A chaperone will be offered during intimate examinations or procedures.
What to Expect from Our Healthcare Professionals
- They will explain the nature of the examination or procedure and the role of the chaperone.
- They will obtain your explicit consent for the examination or procedure and for the presence of a chaperone.
- They will document in your medical record whether the offer of a chaperone was made and whether it was accepted or declined.
Confidentiality
- All chaperones adhere to our practice’s confidentiality policy.
- Any concerns or breaches of confidentiality will be addressed promptly.
