Chaperone Policy

Introduction

At Brixton Hill Group Practice, we prioritise patient dignity, privacy, and safety during all consultations, examinations, and procedures. Our chaperone policy is in place to protect both patients and healthcare professionals.

What is a Chaperone?

A chaperone is a trained observer present during a medical examination or procedure to provide support to both the patient and the healthcare professional. The chaperone’s role includes:

  • Ensuring patient dignity and privacy
  • Providing emotional support
  • Protecting against any form of abuse
  • Assisting with procedures if necessary

Types of Chaperones

  • Clinical Chaperone: A healthcare professional who understands the procedures being carried out.
  • Non-Clinical Chaperone: A trained administrative staff member aware of the chaperone role.
  • Personal Chaperone: A family member, friend, or relative chosen by the patient.

Patient Rights

  • You have the right to request a chaperone at any time during your consultation, examination, or treatment.
  • You can choose to have a family member, friend, or relative present as a chaperone.
  • If a chaperone is not available, you have the right to reschedule your appointment.

  • They will obtain your explicit consent for the examination or procedure and for the presence of a chaperone.
  • They will document in your medical record whether the offer of a chaperone was made and whether it was accepted or declined.
